Why are we doing this to ourselves? The answer to our health qualms is not at the pharmacy, there in our gardens.
Natural green juice is the one of the best kept beauty secrets around. Forget Clinique, Maybelline or Cover girl, whether you want beautiful skin or to remove yourself from the handcuffs of medications you must start on the inside!
Juicing is ideal for everyone but especially great for those who haven't eaten a lot of fresh greenery in a while because it allows you to consume more vegetables and fruit than you could possible eat in one sitting.
Drinking green juice balances your PH levels and gives your blood stream a direct dose of vitamins, minerals, protein, oxygen and enzymes. I prefer juicing to smoothies because juice gives you instant energy and I personally feel more hydrated afterward. Smoothies are easier to clean up after and make you feel fuller longer, however I have been told by folks that they can't quite get past the thickness and texture of the smoothie.
My morning beverage contains (for 1 person 16ounces)
• 2 Carrots
• 2 handfuls of Red leaf lettuce
• 1 Cucumber (please peel the skin if not using organic)
• 1 Tomato
• 1 orange
When you consume too much of anything your body takes what it needs and dumps the rest, which is why I favor only drinking a small amount of juice at a time. I recommend drinking juice twice a day, once in the morning and once after you get home from work or before you eat dinner. You should drink your juice on an empty stomach, mixing liquids and solids slows down the digestive process, so consume the juice and then wait 30- 45 mins before eating anything solid.
Variety is the spice of life, so switch it up! Add different veggies into your daily juice mix but a good rule of thumb is a 3:1 ratio: three veggies to 1 fruit.
There are a variety of juicers on the marketplace today and they are set at different prices ranging from $45.00 to $600.00. I will not discuss prices and brands in this article however I will discuss the categories of juicers. Juicers generally fall into three categories: centrifugal, masticating, and twin gear. What the difference, and how do you choose?
Centrifugal Juicers use a fast spinning grater to shred your green goes through a strainer and out the spout, while the pulp flies up and into a basket. Masticating Juicers use one slow turning gear that chews up the greens and squeezes the juice through a stainless steel screen.
Twin gear Juicers work at super slow speed squishing your greens between two gears until the pulp is nearly dry. Although typically masticating and twin gear juicers produce more juice they also tend to be more expensive, bulkier and harder to clean.
Centrifugal juicers are less bulky, cut down on food prep time because of its wider mouth and are also significantly less expensive. I personally own a centrifugal machine, the first juicer I ever bought and it gets used daily!
Juicing is of great benefit to your health. Even if you do not change your diet by simply adding one or two juices into your daily regime you will improve your health by leaps and bounds.
Good Luck!
